Africa’s tourism sector is almost entirely based on an intact and functioning natural environment. Tourism growth and development in Africa needs to place the restoration and protection of functioning natural ecosystems at the heart of every decision it makes. There are a number of planned developments that go completely against this. For example, the planned Batoka Dam, which will inundate the Batoka Gorge, destroy the last undeveloped gorge on the Zambezi and destroy the adventure tourism sector and its jobs; a Ferris Wheel project planned to overlook the falls and a new resort being built in Livingstone that is blocking elephant movement paths and causing human-wildlife conflict. All of these are in contravention of the ideals of the KAZA TFCA but nothing is being done to stop them.
